Additional Benefits

The student health plan provides specific coverages for unfortunate circumstances that can help manage the situation.

These are the complementary insurances included:

Additional Benefits Coverage
Emergency Travel Assistance - Emergency Out of Province Medical and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage 100%

Provides coverage of up to a maximum of $5 million per insured person per benefit year for certain expenses incurred as a result of an emergency while travelling on trips that originated from your Canadian province or territory of residence.

It is important to remind you that this coverage is not available in the province where you attend the school or in your country of origin.

Your coverage period is 180 days per trip, or coverage can be extended to 365 days when travel is required to complete an eligible program or course of study, following confirmation from an academic supervisor.

Coverage is subject to the terms and conditions provided in the Benefits Booklet.

This insurance product is underwritten by AIG Insurance Company of Canada. If you are travelling, download and print your Travel Medical Assistance Card.

You are eligible for this travel coverage when you are:

  • an active member of the health plan,
  • under the age of seventy (70), and
  • are covered under a hospitalization and medical plan of a Canadian province or territory or equivalent.

Spouse and Dependent Children of a person eligible for this coverage who are, under the age of seventy and covered under a hospitalization and medical plan of a Canadian province or territory or equivalent, are eligible if the additional family health coverage was purchased for the current benefit period.

Dental Accident Insurance 80%

Limited to $1000 per accident. The plan covers the services of a dental surgeon, limited to the fees provided in the current General Practitioners fee guide, including dental prosthesis, required for the treatment of a fractured jaw or accidental injuries to natural teeth or jaw if caused by external, violent and accidental means.

Services must be performed within 12 months of accident. If treatment is scheduled to occur more that 90 days after the impact, a treatment plan must be submitted before the end of the 90-day period.

Pre-authorization required. An estimate for all dental accident services MUST be submitted to Canada Life. If you go ahead with treatment without a pre-determination being approved, you are doing so at the risk of the expenses being yours.

Gender-Affirming Care -

Coverage of gender-affirming medical care and legal assistance for students on their gender-affirming journey.

Medical coverage

Gender-affirming care is designed to complement the coverage already provided by provincial health insurance. For eligible procedures, Gender-Affirming Care covers up to $5,000 per procedure (up to a lifetime maximum of $10,000).

To be eligible for this service, a diagnosis of gender dysphoria from a legally qualified physician (MD) or nurse practitioner must be provided and expenses for medical procedures must not already be covered by provincial health insurance.

Legal Assistance

The Plan's Gender Affirmation Care connects students with partner law firms, providing access to a legal consultation service that includes:

  • Advice on what steps you may want to consider during your gender affirmation journey
  • Legal advice on gender and name changes
myvirtualdoctor Virtual Health Care -

myvirtualdoctor provides 24/7 virtual health care services with licensed nurses and doctors through smartphones or computers.

mylegalplan Virtual Legal Support -

mylegalplan provides access to legal resources such as customizable legal documents, 24/7 legal hotline to speak with a legal assistant and consultation with a lawyer from the national network to pursue any civil legal issues.

Critical Illness Insurance -

Your plan provides coverage for a Critical Illness benefit of up to $5,000 which is paid upon diagnosis of a covered illness or injury and survival after 30 days, 365 days for paralysis and a 90 day waiting period for Cancer applies. This benefit is limited to students who are under age 65. For further details on this benefit, download your Critical Illness Brochure. The forms necessary for submitting a Critical Illness claim are available from the Benefits Plan Office.

Tutorial Insurance 80%

Your plan covers 80% up to $15/hour to a maximum of $2,000 per benefit year for private tutorial service if the student is confined to home or hospital for a minimum of 15 consecutive school days.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment -

Your plan provides coverage for the loss of life or limb and for paralysis caused by an accident. The amount of your life benefit is $5,000. Please contact the health and dental plan office for a complete schedule of losses.
