Eligibility Criteria
The International Student Medical Plan provides coverage in the event of an emergent medical occurrence for eligible international students enrolled at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, such as an injury, illness, or accident, minimizing the costs associated with the effects of injury or ailments costs while studying in Canada. The coverage is comparable to doctor-insured services such as visiting a medical clinic or hospital.
Eligible students will be insured through the mandatory international plans; the International Student Medical Plan - mycanadaplan Powered by Morcare; and Emergency Transportation and Repatriation Plan. The fees will be added to your student account as a part of the tuition when you are enrolled at Saskatchewan Polytechnic.
International students are automatically enrolled in the international plans if they meet the following criteria:
- You are a new international student; or
- You are a Continuing or Returning international student; and
- You hold a valid study permit; and
- You must be registered and accepted in an eligible program as an international student; and
- You are under the age of 65.

International Wallet Card
Students enrolled in the International Student Medical Plan can generate their International Benefits Card by selecting the link below When following the link for your school instructions include entering your Date of Birth, Student ID.
Opting Out
International students who have a valid Saskatchewan Health Authority provincial card can submit an online opt-out application to waive the International Student Medical Plan by the applicable term deadline. You must upload to your application a picture or scan copy of your Saskatchewan Health Authority provincial card as proof of coverage when completing the online opt-out form. Additionally, if you have alternate comparable international plan coverage as a visitor to Canada, you can upload your proof of alternate coverage for review.
Coverage Period
International students are enrolled to the Saskatchewan Polytechnic Students' Association - SPSA International Student Medical Plan for a 30-day term plan commensurate with their approved registration dates as confirmed by the SPSA and International Department. The 30-day coverage period allows students the necessary time to apply for Saskatchewan's Provincial Health Services Insurance plan. During this period, eligible students can use their International Student Medical Plan as per the plan outline.
All international students, paying international tuition, will be enrolled in Repatriation Insurance at the end of the 30-day term insurance and remain enrolled in the Repatriation Insurance while studying at Saskatchewan Polytechnic; the coverage provided is effective while in Canada. Students will be able to generate their international Benefits Card via the international student website, as well as access their policy documentation and claim forms, as necessary.
Returning and continuing international students registered for an active term with Saskatchewan Polytechnic will be automatically enrolled in the mandatory Repatriation Insurance plan for a duration of 12 months commencing from the first day of your program month's effective date.
Effective Date
Eligible students will receive a 30-day term period aligned with their program start date. Term effective and expiry dates are set by the Students' Association of Saskatchewan Polytechnic - SPSA and the insurer.
For example: Summer 2023 Term - July 8th effective date.

Expiry Date
The expiry date of your benefits is the 30th day from the first of your effective date.
Repatriation insurance plan expiry dates are no more than 365 days from your first day insured including the International Student Medical Plan effective date.

Saskatchewan Health Authority
The Saskatchewan Health Authority Insurance plan is a provincial plan designed to provide eligible residents with coverage related to medically necessary care under insured doctor services, such as most hospital and doctor services. Saskatchewan Health does not cover dental visits, prescription drugs, eye wear and corrective lenses and travel. To be covered for insured health services in Saskatchewan, you must be registered with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.
International students studying and residing in Saskatchewan with a valid study permit of 12 months or greater must apply for coverage. Registration can made as soon as you arrive to Saskatchewan, Canada.
It is the student's responsibility to apply for their Saskatchewan Health provincial card while studying and residing in Saskatchewan, Canada.
To apply for the Saskatchewan Health Authority provincial insurance plan students are required to complete the online application form on the Province of Saskatchewan's government website.
As an international student, and you are a student from outside Canada, you may be eligible for Saskatchewan Health. Your application must be received with proof of full-time enrolment to a Designated Learning Institution and must be accompanied by a valid study permit issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
Once application is made, based on your eligibility, as per the Saskatchewan Health website, coverage begins on the first day of the third month after arrival in Canada.
